especially when some definitions of 'accountability' are very good ones, and others are....... hm. i'm definitely suspicious of some things that have been said in the name of accountability

Prime example of why Social Media Bad since "accountability" is a nuanced and often contested term that demands lengthy backup and explanation for its use on a case-by-case basis... On platforms that benefit from brevity.

Say it ain't so! It's such a good word. Maybe I'll just use it in real life, where I don't have a character limit and can(attempt to) explain nuance.

It's why I don't believe discourse will ever be "fixed" by everyone using the same terms. Instead people will have to learn to describe things in their own words, and ask about meanings if they aren't clear.

I don't like Steven Pinker, but he came up with a useful term for this problem: The euphemism treadmill. Terms that were once effective for communicating one thing acquire negative connotations, and then you need to come up with a new term for what the old one used to mean.
-
Of course, when he invented the term he was describing a process that happened over enough time that you had a chance to be aware of it. Now the entire cycle can be over in about a week and nobody knows what happened.
