  1. The Hospital Authority Employees' Alliance, the union behind the medical strike, says Carrie Lam's latest border restrictions aren't enough as the three ports of entry still open account for >60% of all arrivals to HK from mainland China.

  2. Only the two land border entry points, plus the airport (all marked out in red boxes below) will remain open from midnight tonight. Carrie Lam has still refused to close the border completely, and condemned the medical strike as "extreme" and "political."

A local Hong Kong beer brewery has made its own hand sanitisers and is handing them out free to those who need it. "We're tired of this government; we can only rescue ourselves. Today, in the blink of an eye, Hong Kong has entered a second battle."

Strike details: Day 1 (Mon, 3 Feb): suspend non-emergency services Days 2-5 (Tue-Fri): all union members regardless of rank strike "The already dire situation in HK could only turn even direr, for the incompetence of our govt continues to bring us to the point of no return."

First time I've seen this satirical street sign sticker—likely a direct jab at the HK govt response to the coronavirus outbreak. The Chinese 正苦("very bitter") puns on 政府 ("govt") but I'm taking the bitterness to refer to the suffering of the people, neglected by authorities.

French sociologist Jean-Noël Kapferer, in his book "Rumours: Uses, Interpretations, & Images": "The notion of an 'official' source is a political notion...rumours constitute a counter-power...a sort of check on power." That's why Carrie Lam & the CCP hate "rumours" so much.

The Hong Kong government that's scrambling to deal with the coronavirus outbreak is one that's facing historically low levels of public trust. During SARS, 43% of HKers said they don't trust the govt. Now 64% say they don't trust the govt.

Life Bread-branded beer. The saleswoman said it's black IPA, creamy, with hints of vanilla. And of course, shade at the Hong Kong Police, whose attempt to throw a classist insult at protester has once again been turned into a citywide meme.

Wo Ho-Chung is a firefighter and champion trail runner, and on the night of the July 21 Yuen Long attack, he and his wife (a former nurse) drove to the metro station to help the injured. Here's a video of an interview they did with Ming Pao Weekly:

Kind of cheeky for the HK govt to proudly proclaim there's freedom of travel when they've just denied entry to Human Rights Watch executive director

Received this latest email this evening, believed to be from Alexandra Wong/Grandma Wong: "Right now, the likelihood of me being detained isn't high...but the possibility that I'll be disappeared is not non-existent." She called on people to stand up for and protect Taiwan & HK.
