How many people need to die in these cars before it starts to matter?!?

How many people? Greater than or equal to the amount of people that die in normal gas cars.

You realize that gas vehicles sometimes catch fire and burn up right? I've watched it happen on the side of the road myself, fire trucks and all.

Imagine that would of been a gas car. Different outcome.

Probably thermal runaway from lithium batteries, so if gas would have been non issue.

this is making me reconsider getting a plug-in car ... i don't recall any news stories of gasoline powered cars spontaneously catching on fire but this is far from the first one with a BEV ...

No, this is primarily an issue with the specific chemistry of Tesla, NCA. No other EV has this level of inherent venting with flame potential. Nobody has videos of their Leafs, Volts, Fiskers or other cars doing this - because they will not.

Lots of people saying "yeah, but gas cars catch fire all the time." Big mistake. The comparison should be to other late model high-end luxury cars. When's the last time you saw a newer S-class Benz burning on the side of the road? There's your comparison.

A more fair comparison would be “When was the last time you saw a Mercedes burning on the side of the road vs the last time you saw a Tesla burning on the side of the road?” Comparing something you see in person to something you see on Twitter to judge frequency is just silly.
