20 yrs ago subjects like science, tech, engineering & math (STEM) became emphasized in public schools. But history, civics, government and art are just as important & their de-emphasis in schools has had devastating effects. (There’s a reason why he said “I love the uneducated”)

Yeah so many kids stop reading as soon as their English teacher stops setting them homework. This aliteracy sets forth a wave of aging pseudo-intellectual hipsters that think Comedians are the modern philosophers of our time and Candace Owen's is very clever.

It’s amazing how little literature children are being taught to read today. It’s like it’s been edged out of the curriculum...!

Literature is sustenance for the soul, you don't stop reading even as you move out of childhood. But it's because helicopter parents prescribe a greater focus on mathematics and code, because that's where the money is. No money in reading Tolstoy.

I don’t blame parents for wanting their children to learn things that increase their ability to make a living someday. But all of us need to recognize the importance of culture and art in developing citizens capable of creating and maintaining a wise society.

Sure that's true, I don't blame them either, but some kids aren't going to be predisposed to math as much as others. I think it's about giving kids the biggest breadth of experiences for them to begin to find their own passions. Not just jamming them all into STEM.

I agree. All of which should also include getting rid of high-stakes testing.
