1/ Police brutality is part of a larger system of brutality. Our economic system is brutal to the poor, our environmental policies are brutal to the earth, factory farming is brutal to animals, and our military policies are too often brutal towards other people in the world.

2/ A tendency towards violence is a national character defect. From slavery to genocide of Native Americans to mass incarceration & police brutality, it’s not enough to treat the effects. It’s time for us to recognize the underlying cause, to atone for it & commit to real change.

3/ This generation won’t have peace If we think it’s as simple as getting rid of institutional forms of violence. We will have true peace only when we decide to wage peace. That’s why the peaceful protests are important. Why justice is important. And why we need a Dept of Peace.

It starts in the womb. Yet millions lack medical care & proper nutrition. Childcare is a privilege. Fair wages an illusion. We created a world which thrives on others’ pain and suffering. In the name of freedom we militarized the police and armed ourselves.😔

I like that. The Dept. of Peace. Would others laugh at that? That's what you're up against. I love it. Mature politics.

Peaceful protests ARE indeed important, Marianne. But forceful/violent tactics, in select circumstances when necessary, are also important. Power concedes nothing without a demand, and the demand has to be backed by the real threat of force.

Peace never works for long. I unfortunately don't think much will change. This is global not just here. When we allow companies to own property & don't value people for more than a paycheck or what they can do for us, nothing will ever really change.

Waging peace is the same as waging war and is sort of Orwellian. The people in power profit from war and chaos this is nothing new. Waging “peace” and dying by their clubs did not win the civil rights war. It’s when Malcolm spoke about fighting back that they finally gave in
