It demonstrated that he could quickly clear and secure an area. It was so secure, the secret service allowed the President to walk down the street. If he can do that there, he can do it anywhere. Moral of the story, don't loot, but Marriane would never tell looters to stop. 
Where the protesters were, there aren’t even any stores to loot. People were simply standing around. I know because I was there. There’s nothing to be proud of that the secret service would tear gas a crowd of Americans simply practicing their Constitutionally protected rights.
