3/ William Lloyd Garrison called the Constitution a "covenant with death" because of its tacit approval and support of slavery. I would argue that it is even more of a covenant with death than ever, because it still allows slavery and still denies women equal rights.
So the march of history, the improvements of former generations mean nothing to you. They do to me. We improved at times, slid back at times. The point is what we do in our own time.
