Violence should never be a goal, but I think we have to recognize that the potential for violence is a very powerful lever for the lower classes, especially when those in power have long had a monopoly on that potential.

Consider that the implied threat of mass nonviolent protests is that the ruling elite see the capacity or potential to also organize that mass movement into something that physically threatens them.
