Conservatives tend to emphasize more of America has done right & progressives tend to emphasize more of what America has done wrong. The higher truth lies in realizing both: loving our ideals and possibilities enough to be brutally honest with ourselves about what has gone wrong.
I disagree with that. I’m not a conservative, but I agree with Eisenhower who said “the American mind at its best is both liberal and conservative.” Let’s not confuse conservatism with corporatism.

That's only true if you're using the word "conservatism" to mean something very different from what it means in common discourse. You can argue that the word's been twisted from its original meaning, but anyone praising "conservatism" today is, in practice, praising Republicans.

You could make a similar argument about modern liberals embracing a secular kind of "progress" that empowered elitism & left a lot of people behind. I think the most meaningful values in this country aren't easily categorized as "liberal" or "conservative."

It is almost never either or. The environmental cause is at it's core a conservative movement. Saving and preserving our land and soil for the future, conserving it.
