From an authoritarian agenda to unjust economic and criminal policies to manipulation by political parties to outright voter suppression, the undermining of democracy is in full swing even as we speak. Our generation is called to defend it no differently than others. And we will.

While we are aspiring for a true and equitable democracy, I think it’s of utmost importance to be truthful, unbiased and accurate with our language and labels. I was taught that we lived in a democracy but looking around, and back through history, it appears otherwise.

To be “truthful, unbiased and accurate,” in many ways we have been... but it’s a journey getting there. 14th Amendment, Women’s suffrage 1921, the Voting Rights Act 1965 - all hard won efforts at establishing it. Other generations didn’t owe us anything. Ours to do our part now.

Hmm, world banks run by governments that are owned by multinational corporations by definition isn’t very democratic. A plutocratic hegemony, maybe. Yes the people’s vote matters, but the power is firmly in the hands of the elite; most recently evident in the current DNC process.
