Well. It’s more their decision than it is ours.
The United States has a reputation, now currently in shatters, of at least trying to stand up for human rights and international law. According to international law, the fact that you are occupying a territory does not give you the legal right to annex it.

Sure. We saw that a few years back with Russia and Georgia. That still does not make it our responsibility to be involved in the dispute at all.
