My late godfather, my Uncle Bob, was a #VietnamVet in the #MichiganMilitia and a proud member of the #NRA, and if he was alive today, he would probably have been on the steps of the capitol building armed and waving a #Confederate flag. No, really. #MichiganProtest #Michigan

He was also a Michigan #CivilWar re-enactor on the Confederate side, so he had all the gear... Does it make sense? Not to me. But does that mean I loved him any less? He holds a very special place in my heart.

AND, I disagreed with him on SO many issues. Seriously, SO many. But if we only react, rage, fight against the people we disagree with, how can we ever expect to understand another viewpoint and ideally facilitate change or at the very least compromise?

The last phone call I had with Uncle Bob (2 months before he died), he said some racist things... I disagreed with his viewpoints, but I calmly let him talk, and then I, calmly, presented a different perspective. He didn’t completely agree with my take on it but conceded a bit.

It’s not easy to change someone’s belief systems especially if they’ve held those beliefs for decades, but we can try. We can start. We can choose to be calm, considerate, compassionate. #BeTheChange

I believe everyone can change as long as we create an environment that is safe to facilitate that change to open their minds to new beliefs. #BeTheLight
