Yes they are; the world has scarce resources, and people have natural, innate ties of affection based on national similarity. As you love your immediate family members more than me in the abstract as a "fellow American"

Fundamentally, Communism/Global Socialism rests on an impossibility: that radically different peoples with disparate cultures, civilizational aims, and social mores, separated for so long evolution gave us different ethnic tracts, will forget all that to ensure everyone is equal.

If you have socialist polity you have to determine who gets the goods; we can't pay for everybody. Then national unity so everyone pulls the wagon vs. gets on the wagon. E.g. the New Deal, which is not even possible in a nation that can't even agree it has a right to be here.

You shouldn’t confuse “nationalism” qua xenophobic or racist emotions with the structure of a state. Socialism is about making end-directed choices about what kind of society we want to live in. The ideology of globalism is of the planetary free movement of people and capital.
