It was a radical idea in 1776 & it’s a radical idea today: that govts are instituted to secure “the right of all people to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Someone economically locked down in a survival mode from which they can’t escape is not free to pursue happiness

Yes, those rights exist without government, but the people institute government for the sole purpose of protecting those rights, and in fact to secure more rights. As a society advances, things which were once privileges become rights by virtue of society’s ability to provide.

given she argues for systemic change regularly I think the only person who is misinterpreting anything is you just because you know you "have rights", doesn't mean other people care about your rights. the govt is to ensure they are not alienated by a malicious force
