The thing about a crisis is that it makes you drop a lot of ultimately unimportant preoccupations within the first 10 minutes. Can make you drop into a deeper place within yourself...making you more open to meaning, to literature, to art, to truth, to other people, to compassion.

Alt-take re: crisis: for (many of) those of us who’ve spent all/most of our lives in crisis - childhood poverty, insufficient bootstraps, crippling debts - it’s really not much scarier than our every single day. Y’all down here in it with us now.

We already have all the emotional tools needed to weather this storm. Literature? Music? Public radios and public libraries pretty much raised me. The impoverished can teach the rest of y’all a LOT about living meaningfully in bad times.
