For those who are worried about the “socialist” label, Bernie is referring to the likes of European countries some of whom have more vibrant entrepreneurial capitalist opportunities than we do. But it’s not a healthy capitalism when so many people have no real access to capital.

So is capitalism good or bad

When capitalism has a conscience, I think it’s a good thing. When it becomes untethered to any ethical and moral consideration for people or planet, it’s a bad thing. It all has to do with the consciousness of the people pursuing it.

One factor that untethers an economic system from moral or ethical considerations is the number of people involved in that system. As the number of people gets larger, the more we lose our individuality, our very humanity. We become mere statistics. Faceless digits.

I'm still baffled by your statements that US capitalism had a conscience before Reagan was elected, then it was all downhill from there. This is an honest bafflement. You and I are both part of the VN War generation. I remember talk about the LBJ admin having no conscience.

You make a good point. At least we didn’t have such tremendous income inequality and wealth gap before the 1980s. The middle class was doing much better in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Hence why @AndrewYang proposal of human centred capitalism is the best approach. We need a trickle up economy; one that works for the American people. Having a UBI by putting money into our hands is what will make the country prosper.

Capitalisms only driving factor is to deliver a return on investment. It is consumption and expansion, limitless, and on a planet with finite resources, it doesn’t work. Socialism is sustainable. Look up Cuba’s sustainability record.

You can use the same system of growth for things that aren’t capital, which I think is what she’s referring to. There’s plenty of principles of the market that can apply to daily life and are very useful

With regulations capitalism is the best model. At this time the needle on how we have a middle class has moved by schooling and health care costs

What's always lost in the convo about Castro is the ruthless military dictator, Batista whom we backed w/financial & logistical support in part because his reign benefited our multinational corporations - our news typically omits that part of the story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulgencio_Batista …

Capitalisms raison d'être is to become “untethered” or else it dies. And then capitalist sycophants save it.

You are correct in this statement. Unfortunately, Bernie wouldn’t know economics if it hit him in the face. The “social democrat” is obfuscation of his true beliefs. Don’t take my word for it—take his.
