There are literally hundreds of thousands of scholarships, grants & employer-funding options for people that want to attend college in the US. But like anything else in life it involves choices, and sometimes compromises. Why should people that don't attend pay for those that do?
Because the entire economy is better off when more people are educated. It allows more people to participate in it, which is the best way to promote prosperity for all.

Yes, this is the key point - education comes in many forms, from union apprentice training to watching your grandfather fix the lawn mower. As you note we have slipped into assuming that college education is the highest value, when for many people (most, even), it's not
And by the way, thank you for running.. sometimes we lose sight of the fact that we are humans, with human ambitions and fears and relationships. It was nice to have someone in the race that brought out that humanity, that did talk to a grander hope
