I rarely disagree with @marwilliamson but I’m really not in agreement with this. How can the opposite of patriarchy (male domination) be fraternity (which is also about male domination)? The opposite surely is matriarchy (female domination) as @i_am_joli_anne noted?

That's not the point, it's that both patriarchy and matriarchy are rooted in power and control, one is just a transfer of the other. We should be striving for shared values (fraternity), but to get away from the male connotation as some of us stated above: *community*

Hmmm, not to nitpick, but it’s still a word with a gender bias. I’m so ready for new language for ourselves that doesn’t revert to a “male as the default setting” on everything. I like “community.”
