We need to change from being econotarians to being humanitarians, from measuring humanity’s progress in economic terms to measuring humanity’s progress in terms of happiness. When we do, we will automatically make public policy decisions based on what most helps people thrive.

For some happiness is found in isolation, for others in togetherness. Some desire to always be happy, others enjoy the cyclical nature of highs and lows. How do you propose measuring happiness, or testing the effects of various policies on US happiness?

Check out the UN's World Happiness Report for 1 example. It's dominated by Nordic countries with higher taxes, universal social welfare programs, strong unions, major collective bargaining rights & economies with capitalist & socialist tendencies. Make of that what you will.
