I respectfully disagree. The common thread from Goldwater to Reagan to Trump has been casting government in all its forms as the villain. It serves the conservative purpose to gut agencies and services, then point to those exact institutions as examples of what’s wrong.

I agree. This is late stage conservatism. They have won victory after victory since Reagan, and now they are emboldened. The veneer of being for small, responsible government has worn off and exposed them as hypocrites and servants of the ultra wealthy.
