Obviously Judaism takes our embeddedness and responsibility very seriously. This week I taught a lot about our obligations to care for the vulnerable stranger, the obligations on homeowners to not set up their homes so that they can’t “hear the cries of the poor,” +

The obligations of a community to provide housing for those without, the obligations of a society to set up a police force with accountability, the obligations of a justice system to take extra measures to ensure decisions aren’t made in bias or groupthink.

As one participant said at the end of the course, “before, I thought social justice was a separate thing that we did sometimes. Now I see that in Judaism it’s set up to be part of everything we do, every aspect of our lives.”

For some, the place where they draw the connection between spirituality and morality is this larger mystical sensibility I’ve been alluding to. For some it’s in knowing they’re their siblings’ keeper. For some it’s in knowing that they are here to serve, to give, as the can.

Knowing “it’s not about me” is actually a profound spiritual statement and position.

All this sparked by someone talking about the need for spiritual leadership now. I agree that we need that, desperately.
