Govt used to fund public colleges at high levels: public colleges in the 70s, 80s, early 90s; pull back from govt has added to need of schools to increase tuition. We need to decide on our priority: Tax breaks for corporations or higher learning opportunities for our people?

Amen! I owe $111k in student loan debt from combined undergrad and masters graduating in 2006 (on top of scholarships). Affects every financial decision I make and is like a black cloud hanging over my head. Take out the loan they said. You can easily pay it back they said.

At 18 or 19, we’re forced to make financial decisions that will affect the rest of our lives. I have over 100k in student loan debts, and my family struggles to pay monthly bills. Education should be free. Rebuild the 99% #Marianne2020

The govt. defunding of higher education that began in the 1970’s correlates with open enrollment. A lot of public universities were tuition-free until the minority students showed up. Schools erected economic barriers to replace the racist ones.

This country spends $80 billion dollars a year on prison that do not make us safer. That’s enough enough money to make every public university and college tuition-free. Btw, the minorities that are locked out of higher education end up in prison. #SchoolsNotPrisons

Ikr!! I came out with $65k and the rest is interest that has accrued in 13 years. It's impossible.

After finishing optometry school in 1997 I had over $120K (yes, that much 22 yrs ago) in student loan debt! I am grateful to have been able to pay that back but not everyone is so lucky. It is a horrible burden to bear! I would love for the next generation to not have to!

We have a federal gov't of strictly defined powers and responsibilities. The list of things over which Congress has authority are listed in the Constitution, Article 1, Section 8. Unless you can find the word "education" there, it is not a proper function of the federal gov't.

Maybe learning how to increase the value of a bachelor's first...then working out the math and strategies to pay the costs of higher education?
