I woke up and didn't feel like getting out of bed. 43F outside and I was shivering in my room. I haven't ran all year and the most I've ever ran before was 6 miles at a time. So it was a perfect day to go run a marathon shirtless in the cold alone.

First 10 miles were easy. Hips and feet started to hurt, since I've got on sprinting spikes, because I didn't have any distance running shoes, but I thought I could still manage. But then 12.5 miles in, my left quads started to cramp up and I had to start limping.

My house was 2.5 miles away, so I started to limp back. On the way back, people walking their dogs were wearing winter coats and joked to me that they were overdressed. I still felt pretty good overall. But then 0.5 miles from my house, my feet also cramped up.

Now I got cramping quads and feet. I couldn't move at all and was losing body heat fast. That last half mile probably took me half an hour to limp back. Good. I was afraid that I was becoming too civilized. When I got back home, I was tempted to quit, but I knew it wasn't over.

I've never shivered so much. I took a break to eat, hydrate, and massage my cramped muscles and got back out there. Limped another 11.5 miles in the cold. If it didn't get dark, I think I could have done another 10 miles.

In this world of comfort, we always underestimate how much we can do. We make excuses and overintellectualize about everything. The only way to discover what you're truly capable of is to face whatever you don't want to do and have the will to win at all costs.

A few years ago, I would have rationalized that doing this would have costed me muscle mass or I could have gotten sick. No. Fuck all these bullshit excuses. This was about discovering a part of my mind that I didn't know existed and rise above mediocrity.
