This is one of my favorite essays ever. I reread it every few weeks.
@martyrmade's account got mysteriously deleted by Twitter a while back. Refollow him. I'd also love to hear a podcast discussion between you two.2 replies 0 retweets 17 likes -
I really liked it, but I think it’s misguided. He tried to contrast religion with rationalism, but it’s all religious thinking. Genesis = Big Bang and revelations=heat death. The real contrast would be accepting the future is fundamentally unknowable; the present is what matters

The claim that everything must inherently fade and nothing can matter on the eternal scale I s another form of hubris. Obviously extreme example from
@Meaningness but we can’t know that, even if it seems the most likely scenario.pic.twitter.com/8GGZyTtXu3

Go ahead and read it as, "Even if everything must inherently fade..."

That just seems like an axiom of the essay, and I dont agree. Things probably will fade, but the camp could easily have a wall we’re ignorant of. You mention it was only by the priests observing the seasons we developed any mechanistic understanding of the universe beyond gods

It’s a solid essay, I just think it’s easy to underestimate the uncertainty of the future.

I recently rewatched The Bridge Over the River Kwai and realized I need to rewrite this essay with it in mind

I can definitely see the relevance. If it ever gets out I look forward to reading it
