I think people vastly underestimate the socially retributive function of prison. I think people would be far more likely to want to take justice into their own hands if the person who wronged them basically just got sent to a fancy hotel-like rehab facility.

I don’t know... many people I know (in Australia) are already quite convinced prison is a holiday. And many people are less retributive when given better info (https://uat.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/publication-documents/More%20Myths%20and%20Misconceptions.doc …) Also, prison in Norway is very much not retributive, but works wellhttps://www.businessinsider.com/why-norways-prison-system-is-so-successful-2014-12 …

My opinion is mostly based on intuition, so I don't hold to it very strongly. I'm aware of more rehabilitative approaches being effective, but you have to wonder how much is a cultural difference between Norway and other countries. Norway has very low rates of homicide overall.

Yuh, I see what you’re saying, and my data is pretty limited, too. But I have to say, majority of info I’ve come across in the last ~decade has led me to “people aren’t as retributive as they think they’d be”. My guess: a few would go rogue, but not many. And less over time.
