They took the combined might of the Allies to stop, so yeah, they became a huge powerhouse very quickly. I think the problem was the same thing that animated that, also animated the Holocaust and WW2.

Maybe. You have to remember though, the Holocaust was caused, in part, by both an unwillingness to relocate the Jews on the part of the West, and the murder of the Palestinian Jew who was working with the Nazis to relocate them. The later is talked about by

To be fair, the West didn’t realise the extent of what was going to happen if they didn’t help forcibly relocate people who didn’t want to be relocated. Maybe if they did, they would have acquiesced, I don’t know. But it still would have been a huge trauma for Europe’s Jews.

It's a good question. Actually, it was more like half.. something like 100k of the 210k or so present in 1939. The Germans went a lot harder on the Jews in the east.

I guess it makes sense ideologically. Being a Slavic Jew is a double whammy.

They were also just very different. German Jews were fully assimilated, eastern Jews had been living as Jews in the Pale. German Jews tended to dislike eastern Jews as uncouth, and many eastern Jews, like Chaim Weizmann, despised German Jews as arrogant.

Hitler basically saw German Jews as a potential fifth column for the real enemy, the communist Jews to the east and capitalist Jews to the west. He respected that many had fought for Germany in WW1, but believed they'd lost because some portion undermined Germany from within.

I was just going to say, I have a pet theory that the German Jews that lived owed their survival to Junger. Hitler seemed to worship him, and Junger was disgusted by the treatment of his German Jewish WW1 comrades.

Everyone should worship Junger.

Junger is almost unknown relative to the Great War heroes in America (Patton, MacArthur, Chesty Puller, etc.). His story would make an incredible movie.
