Data isn't the new oil, it's the new Co2: we are more impacted by other people’s data (with whom we are grouped) than we are by data about us. My new blog.

Cherry picking freedom of expression, among a host of human rights implicated by content decisions, as well as limiting the board's ability to make broader policy recommendations are also problematic as I argue here:

Couldn't agree more. I listened via audio book and the book knocked my socks off. Beautifully written, so honest, inspiring, and layers of depth and richness. I especially appreciated her efforts to humanize her journey to make her success more fathomable to her younger admirers.

I deeply admire her commitment to, and rootedness in BiH from learning Bosnian/Serbo-croatian to the efforts & courage it took to get on that plane with no clear plans, to the dedication in writing "A Problem from Hell". I can't recommend her book enough.

My main take-away is taking the time to understand what your are passionate about early-on, think hard about why, and then dig deep, build expertise & go into the field with a purpose as did in Bosnia.

For me, and for so many of you, cancer is personal. We all have our personal stories of struggle, pain and resilience. None of our stories are extraordinary.

I love a good metaphor & this from on the oversight board is pretty brilliant: "It is like introducing video appeals to tennis to make calls more accurate but allowing players a review only when balls are called "out" and not when a ball is called "in".

Both hopeful for the future and extremely depressing for the present. "Elizabeth Denham, the information commissioner, said future generations will be 'astonished to think that we ever didn't protect kids online'".

Although grew out of the data ethics movement, the ethics washing & bashing trends have made me question the value of ethics at times. This article reminds us of the central role moral philosophy plays in informing what questions to ask, and how to ask them.

Couldnt agree more!! And the current focus on ethics could also be seen as a natural and important (!) element of tech. evolution/governance. My two cents:
