Now that MLB has allowed Yankees/Mets to wear first responder hats, they could find selves in awkward position of ranking tragedies. That was always the concern — what happens the next time a team wants to commemorate a terrible event? Is 9/11 only carve out? New questions arise.

Joe Torre was always uncomfortable saying, these teams can have hats for 9/11, but if another team wanted to make a similar gesture for another event they couldn’t. Obviously that thinking has changed with Torre out of his longtime role.

I disagree. 9/11 is really the only date you ever think of for a tragedy. Sure there are many others but they aren’t named after a specific day

Not true, at least not internationally as the UK has 7/7

I feel like the answer should be fairly easy - allow teams to dictate uniform.

Let them. If it’s major national, or even regional, tragedy, let the players commemorate it.
