Quick question @martinkl based on things you have said previously: do you still think this CDC technique is a sort of half-way house to applications writing to append-only logs ("fully developed event sourcing/processing"), or is perhaps a more like a sweet-spot by now?

I don't think there's one right answer; it depends on the situation. CDC has the advantage of being able to use a database in a conventional way, e.g. for validation of data as it is written, but the downside of being messier than event sourcing.

They do cite debezium. Are any of the concerns listed under that point relevant to debezium?
-
Maybe the option to snapshot at any point in time, but I'm sure if they wanted to they could've contributed it back! Hehe

coordination costs with external open source projects are very often not work the friction, especially when you want to have a deep in-house understanding of the underlying system anyway
-
But they gotta try first right? As surveymonkey I can tell you we're more than happy to have contributed with debezium, we could've came with prejudice but there's only one way to get our industry together, and it start from us, software engineers!

Indeed, but monopoly is never a good thing, don’t you think?
-
I don’t think of an open source project as a monopoly?

The state of DBLog as published in the blog post is the result of multiple iterations, where we experimented and tried out various ideas. Our goal is to collaborate with the community and glad to see interest in the way we tackle dumps. Happy to discuss further
@gunnarmorling -
Yes, I'd love to have a conversation some time soon, exploring how we could collaborate.
