Thanks to for pointing out this neat little report from on how Preston (and other cities!) can put drones to public use - although they missed the opportunity to call it Alternative Models of Dronership, for some reason:

As ever, looking across the Atlantic makes me glad Britain has mostly avoided reliance on apps and voting machines in its elections. Perhaps the OAS will be along shortly to intervene.

Clearly not the most important thing about this story, but: woman told she lacks "gravitas" for high profile political/diplomatic role by *Boris Fucking Johnson*. Just....oh why even bother.

"Reeves observed the potential for 'Labour-controlled city regions and local authorities along with anchor institutions' to start pioneering these approaches – a reference to the much-lauded Preston model of community wealth-building."

We don't talk enough about all the post-docs and junior academics writing beautiful, deeply informative and massively time-consuming reference letters for their students despite so often being treated dreadfully by the system. Not trying to incentivise it, just recognising it.

Today some journalists were locked out of an important briefing by a civil servant. Press access to senior figures is vital for a healthy democracy and we cannot allow a precedent to set in. I raised a question in the House of Commons just now.

There is no such thing as 'inner' or 'outer'. But the most telling thing here is a civil servant, David Frost, was to be used for a politically directed selective briefing. Taxpayers' money being used for a politically directed briefing.

Labour's soft left and Corbynite wings both argue that we need more participatory, localised ways to run the economy and our politics - so why can't they agree to agree? My latest for the :

Around 50 people including residents have gathered outside Winchester Tower in Norwich and are saying “thank you” to European friends in many languages - crystal clear message to whoever made THAT poster

It would seem a straightforwardly good idea to have all Primary School children wholly taught through a foreign language for, say, six months. Is there any good reason something like this doesn't happen?

As an undergraduate, I tried to apply at LSE and in the process realised how much it cost, and that I didn’t meet the language requirements. So I gave up. Now I work there. So yeah don’t give up, don’t cut scholarships and abolish education costs.

I hadn't realised that voting intentions in the Irish election are getting as starkly stratified by age as they are in the UK. It promises to be a really intriguing general election next Saturday. (The graphs are from a poll taken last week.)

If you think the last few years have been interesting politically- I have a feeling you ain’t seen nothing yet. And the changes to come might be more profound than anything we’ve seen recently.

Brexit has been a story where years seem to have happened in weeks. Covering all the daily twists and turns, it’s been easy to lose sight of the big picture. But now the dust is settling, we can see that the history of these years has really been that of two major battles.
