reasons it's difficult to write books - you aren't supposed to use ?! even though it's an everyday emotion - no emojis either apparently - writing food scenes makes you hungry - imagining actions scenes is more fun than writing them - you have to actually, you know, write

Wstrząsający reportaż o samobójstwie w prestiżowym liceum. Ale to też rzecz o zamożnej, aspirującej Polsce z jej chorym pędem za sukcesem

Next year, I want to read a long classic book by a woman each month. They have to be at least 500 pages, I can’t have read them before, and I can’t repeat authors on the list. So I’m looking for a few more obscure books. What are your favorite lesser-known classics by women?

  16. Translations of Gramsci into ENG & PL say something about their political & social context... but perhaps they also feed into and shape the language of contemporary debates? DM for pre-print!!! 7/7

  17. Gramsci's English translators (all men) are all also commentators of his thought & the readers' 'guides' to the Notebooks. The Polish translators (two women) remain invisible in the text. 6/7

  18. This is in sharp contrast to the existing English editions of the Prison Notebooks (no less than 5!) which are in dialogue with eachother, providing more accurate & timely translations as well as new and more detailed analyses + commentary. 5/7

  19. I take Gramsci's ideas on language and apply them to the translations of the "Prison Notebooks" into Polish. The first edition (1961) casts Gramsci as a canonical communist theorist. The second (1991) - as a "classical philosopher" whose ideas belong in the past. 4/7

  20. Gramsci was a keen translator from German. Alongside Marx, he translated Brothers Grimm fairy tales for his children. He removed from the text mentions of God, devil, crosses etc, so that his kids would have a secular education. 3/7
