The lie of the American dream is the pursuit of happiness. The problem is happiness doesn't exist by itself, it is the byproduct of something or someone else. Then the final act: people are sold counterfeits that give temporary happiness, instead of God, the creator of happiness.

I would say it means your happiness is conditional on something or someone that will eventually not be able to deliver. That's my experience with everything else I look to for happiness.

The rain falls on the sinner and the saint. His happiness may be conditioned on God also. He just doesn't know it.
