Using a novel framework, we show why these questions matter and the various ways they have been addressed in studies on lexical and gestural alignment. We hope the framework will advance the field, as it can be used to disclose hidden assumptions and further refine theories.

Studies differ a lot with respect to when (non)verbal behaviour is considered to be “aligned”. Should the instances of behaviour be temporally close? Should they have exactly the same form? Should they convey the same meaning?
