Candidates for Indiana’s 5th Congr Distr - R & D - have been invited to address Indiana Farm Bureau’s Political Action Committee’s District Committee of Trustees (“Farm Bureau”) today (Friday, March 13). 1/18
They will “decide which candidate represents the best interests of agriculture and our rural communities.” Farm Bureau represents neither agriculture nor rural communities, but pushes profits of LARGE corporations over all else, even science. 2/18

Among suggested questions for today: “Why are you running?” My answer: To outlaw lobbyists like you and put out of business - or put a major crimp in - the large corporations for which Farm Bureau’s PAC is a shill. 3/18

The small farmer largely is a myth. Farm Bureau’s PAC feeds notions of down-home, aw-shucks America farming like in the good, old-fashioned moral days (i.e., 1950s when life wasn’t all that moral, especially for the poor and minorities). 4/18

The reality: Monsanto can sue those small farmers because bees pollinate w/o regard to patents; confined livestock operations destroy quality of life down-wind and down-stream so that one understands the taciturn expressions in “American Gothic.” 5/18

Small farmers up against these forces learn: Farm Bureau might have “Farm” in its title, but its stands for “family farms” are as fictional as an African American farmer in Deep South Mayberry (i.e., “The Andy Griffith Show”). 6/18

Little Wildcat Creek ran across my parents’ farm. When I was a kid you could see bluegills’ gravel nests in the shallows along the banks. Now the agricultural effluence of fertilizers and pesticides have made the water brown. 7/18

Corporations do not want anyone to know how animals are tortured and killed in confinement operations and so try to limit - through laws brought about by lobbying efforts like Farm Bureau’s - free speech about those operations. 8/18

Farm Bureau wants “rational” environmental laws. The Republican Party was a major force that created the EPA. I think “rational” includes being able to see the bottoms of streams and not smell manure with every breath. 9/18

Groups like Farm Bureau arent “conservative”: “Predisposed to traditional attitudes, beliefs, and teachings; favoring established traditions, social stability, and gradual developments as opposed to abrupt changes.” Black’s Law Dictionary. 10/18

For most of its existence, the Republican Party has advocated for civil rights, protection of the environment, controls on large corporations, progressive income taxes and advancement of knowledge. Those are matters rooted in traditional values. 11/18

The worst? Some GOP candidates on today’s schedule are fundamentalists & say “Evolution’s only a theory.” They slash budgets that would prepare us for pandemics (as dt has) to fund vouchers for religious schools (as run by DeVos’s pals). 12/18

In everyday use "theory" often means untested hunch or guess w/o supporting evidence. But for scientists theory has nearly opposite meaning: well-substantiated explanation of aspect of natural world that incorporates laws, hypotheses & facts. Amer. Mus. Natural History. 13/18

Through overuse, antibiotics are rendered ineffective because ... organisms evolve. Enough people have derided science and knowledge that we face coronavirus. 14/18

I will attend today’s candidate interview process - if still on schedule & not cancelled due to coronavirus - but I don’t want their endorsement. This is one of the view chances a person can have to talk to the creatures of DC’s swamp. 15/18

By May 5 the only contested elections that seem on our Hoosier primary horizon will be in the Democratic Party for POTUS and for Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. By then even those races, from a practical standpoint, may be over. 16/18

If you want to begin to push forces of things like large corporate ownership out of agriculture - and military and many other aspects of our daily lives - you should vote for me. Theodore Roosevelt did not like large corporations. Neither do I. 17/18

My name is Mark Small. I am a GOP candidate for U.S. House Indiana District 5 and the only candidate who is pro-choice, pro-environment, anti-war, progressive and truly conservative. I approve of this blog. Hell, I wrote it. 18/18
