The family farm is 90 acres, mostly abandoned, in the middle of nowhere Kentucky. I haven't seen it in 20y. You and others on here have inspired me to go consider it, though. :)

90 acres of chestnuts and elderberries could support a family in reasonable comfort in today's market. Be worth looking at.

There are so many berries that grow nicely in KY. If my chestnuts germinate at all I am intending to twist an arm or two to put them out down there.

And I guess same with elderberries, if I can get them to germinate.

Know serviceberries? Useful?

I don't know much about them. Just the name really.

When my granddaughter visited she picked the berries from a service berry tree here and made a cake (she was 7). It’s just hard to know value. Chestnuts? Why?

Chestnuts are a low-tannin, high-carbohydrate nut that can be prepared easily and before the blight were one of the most widely grown food plants in the United States. Go check out @BuildSoil, whose pinned tweets will explain it better than I ever will.
