The key to starting third parties in America is to throw their votes to the party most taking their planks into the platform. Jill Stein could have single handed- apparently- prevented Trump had she properly tossed her votes. Then if the major party falters, the third is there.
The problem is that a "third" party has not become one of the two "major" parties since elections of 1860 & 1864.
