The states are the members of the union and therefore vote for who they want as president. Those votes are apportioned based on each states' congressional representation. We vote for who we want our state to select.
Sean - that's myth. Candidates are listed by name. Where are electors' names on the ballot? And I cited a while ago Indiana's statute that requires the electors swear an oath that they'll vote for the candidate of their party.

Only 2 states - Maine & Nebraska- are not winner-take-all. In both electors go by Congr Distr & winner of State gets both Senate seats.
