The Pentagon Papers made clear there was no chance for military victory by U.S. or South Vietnam forces. Over sixty thousand Americans died and well over that number of Vietnamese, Cambodians, Laotians, other Southeast Asians and people who fought as allies of the USA. 6/19

Read the Pulitzer winning book "A Bright Shining Lie" for a very well researched view of Vietnam that supports this view.

It's a great read, Mark. There is a reason it won the Pulitzer- you won't be sorry. On that note, I'd also recommend the outstanding Ken Burns series full of amazing footage.
