Like it or not USA pol structure predisposed to 2-party sys Force & counter-force/checks & balances = govt dom'd by 2 pol parties since 1789 Even as they decried factions (i.e. political parties), Madison (Repub later Demo) & Hamilton (Federalist) helped form first 2 parties

Didn't GOP evolve from the Whigs, while the original Democratic Party divided over slavery and eventually reconstruction and Jim Crow segregation? Dixiecrats eventually became absorbed by the mid 20th century GOP.
GOP & Whigs not so much. Dems were more entrenched in South after Civil War. The Southern Strategy brought Dixiecrats into GOP.
