He's also clinging to the delusion that his rally base will get him a win in the next election, so he does all kinds of daft stuff to appeal to them. He may not be wrong, though, even with a 1/3 base, he has 100% political polarization in this country to work with too.

Trump did one smart thing in his entire life: he figured out that robotic partisanship combined with far-right extremism could win elections (and Putin jumped on board). This is basically just an extension of Nixon's Southern Strategy.
