There was a perception that "self-reflection" had gone too far, to the point that it had become detrimental. There's always a tendency to take a few steps back after dramatic change, but agree that Reagan went too far in the opposite direction.
1974: Nixon was on TV resigning. The war in Vietnam was over. Civ Rts had been advanced so far. ERA was about to pass (it seemed). National self-reflection was what made us great - especially right then. Yet in '80 Reagan & GOP trashed it all as weakness.
