It was a lot of fun speaking with folks at FOSDEM today about sled and io_uring! Here are the slides from my talk today:

It's not every day that a read-after-write makes a server spend 4% of its CPU cycles in one instruction. Wrote that one up here:

Once this gets wired up, I think the motivation is there to finally make page gifting work fully. With that, you can alloc data in your app, gift that data to the kernel, and write it to a file. All without having to copy the data, even once.

( also accountability and reflection is important and largely not happening, nor just in tools choices(re:your comments on GC langs/runtimes), but with pretty much everything today )

For those who missed it, I played with last night, expecting to snark all over it. Instead the experience was damned close to perfect, and now my opinion of has shifted as a result.

Here's an example of writing a generic async algorithm using sender/receiver from the latest Executors proposal (P0443R12) + the changes suggested in P2006. This algo retries an async operation until it succeeds or is cancelled. It was fun to write!

Important: avoid messing with affinities. Several phones handle power management using Linux CPU hotplug events and will dynamically add/remove cores (and renumber existing ones). But affinity masks are tied to numerical core IDs. (Which after renumbering after different cores.)

This paper by should go a long way toward answering the question: Is the sender/receiver pattern from p0443 fast? Answer: Yes, definitely. Many thanks to Niall for demonstrating how to max out an OS's low-level IO with sender/receiver.

Microsoft CEO : "Today we are making the commitment that by 2030 Microsoft will become carbon negative. By 2050, we will remove from the environment all the carbon we have emitted since our company's founding in 1975." News event now:

Biggest news in a long time. After a ton of pressure, Blackrock--which owns more fossil fuel stock than anyone on earth--announces it will put 'climate change at the center of its investment strategy.' A huge--if by no means final--win for activists!

Maybe we can use “dove releases” as opposed to “canary releases” in software development. Argonauts _released_ a dove to see if it was safe to _pass_ through the Symplegades long before coal miners experimented with canaries. Greeks did it first;)

Given this discussion about spinlocks/etc ... now that we have consumer CPUs with 64 cores, can we just go back to cooperative multitasking? It would be much simpler, probably higher performance, and if a program hangs it won't stop the machine like in the old days.
