Someone telling you not to get a second opinion is a reason to get a second opinion

Some of the docs I respect the most have a short list of people they routinely second patients to for second opinions - if patient asks for one or not!

I’ve adopted the please, do get second opinion - make sure you’re at peace before you have nonemergency surgery. And i dunno what it is - if you’re open to that option the doubt melts away. And if they do need it, the post op situation is much better

“If they want a second opinion, do everything you can to help them get one. If you were right, it’ll be, ‘Wow, we went to Mayo & they said the same thing! Dr. M sure knows his stuff!’ If you’re wrong, it’ll be, ‘Thank goodness Dr. M got us to Mayo!’ Win-win.” -my uncle, FM doc

True. OTOH if patient is on fence about proposed treatment, ask them to seek 2nd opinion.Vast majority would come to a decision to go with the proposed plan. Have to ensure they are engaged and have sense of urgency. No short cut to spending time and sharing data.

Second opinions are great. Having someone play second chair who isn’t in your case is bullshit. Don’t hire me then have someone sitting out in the wings giving you advice. Just hire them and let me out

Agree; I used to suggest several other physicians they might get such an opinion from. The only exception was the rare “opinion seeker” patient who had already gotten 7 or 8 opinions by the time they saw me! Additional opinions wouldn’t help them with “decision paralysis” alas

A surgeon told my grandfather “the only time you need a 4th opinion is when none of the previous 3 agreed”.
