There is exciting new neurodegeneration research underway, including . In just three years has become a significant force in the field, and it was great to speak with Katja Brose about their current efforts and future plans.

Finally in press, our systems genetics analysis of the Collaborative Cross microbiome and the discovery of a sleep associated microbe, with much appreciation for the rigorous and thoughtful review we received at Genetics.

Is this the first step toward an accurate, robust diagnostic? Can T cell (immune) dysfunction be targeted for an effective therapy? Much work remains, but this large (198 pts, 91 controls) study led by is an eye-opener:

I like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of all co-authors, especially Ece Karhan & who performed most of the experiments & massive data analysis, Vida Ravanmehr for the machine learning & for all the patient samples!

My profound interest in medicine began ~10 years ago, when proposed its new research institute (now on 's campus). It's hard to capture how much has changed since, but as 2020 draws nigh, I tried!

The decade? It's been good. BUT I could run < 3:10 for the then (), have trouble running that pace for 10k now (). The extra padding around the middle doesn't help 🙄 but still trudging forward. Hope my cerebrovasculature reaps the benefits.

Cancer evolution under selection pressures (incl therapies) drive the development of resistance and metastasis. Currently, diffuse gliomas (a form of malignant brain cancer) are v difficult to treat. This is great new work to learn the mechanisms involved over time.

GWAS and other research over the past ~15 years has found hundreds of variants that > type 2 risk in humans. But why, and what are the mechanisms, and what about genes x environment? Need to go to experimental systems (mice, perhaps?) to learn more.

It's disgusting that some think Nixon should be impeached simply for loving America so much that he just wanted to investigate corruption in the most effective way he could. You'd have to love corruption to criticize the Watergate break-in. It was a perfect break-in.

This is a v interesting finding. The N = 1 here, but there's a lot of more basic research underway into resilience mechanisms. It appears amyloid accumulation is not sufficient for 's development, & the ApoE-tau interactions are compelling targets.

Excellent! And please don't forget that Dr. Friedman built on the work of 's Doug Coleman, who first identified the circulating "satiety factor." Sadly, Doug died five years ago, but his legacy remains strong:

Yes, it's real. Not easy to find, but real, with a lot of great research going on. And we're quite excited for your seminar as well! Reactive ftw.
