If you have a research idea that is feasible and ethical to do, you do not need anyone’s permission or guidance. Take a chance, learn along the way, and see what comes of it on the other side. If nothing else, it will be a useful (and hopefully fulfilling) learning experience.

I hope I never lose the intellectual curiosity that pushed me to undertake this study, and I strongly encourage any grad students or early career researchers with the same curiosity to go for it and see what happens.

It’s not my greatest work, and I cringe at parts when I look back at it, but I am also very proud of the paper given where I was in my academic career. The topic isn’t remotely related to my current research, yet strands of its theory and method still influence my work today.

Today is Hockey Day in Canada. 10 years ago, as a 2nd year PhD student, I had a wild idea to do a real-time analysis of how the event was represented on TV and responded to on Twitter. I went for it, and it eventually became my first academic publication.

This is an excellent piece by on race and exclusion in sport. It looks beyond pro sport to show problems within an elite amateur sport culture (Ultimate) that prides itself on inclusion, showing how much anti-racist work needs to be done at all levels of sport.

Designing this course has made me appreciate how many amazing scholars are doing critical research on sport, physical activity and health. I’m excited to engage students next term, and hopefully get them thinking more critically about the complexities of this topic! /8

There are many other topics that aren't standalone units that I plan to weave into lectures, including mental health and sport, athletic labour, the health toll on athletes’ families, and health “legacies” of sport mega-events, & physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. /6
