Seriously though this idea seems early to need. The Navy should tag CTF 73 in Singapore to handle this, the ship count per day in AOR is low. Plus I would not assume you can operate a warfighting MOC out of Singapore, Australia may be the only answer -or buy an expensive flagship

If the Navy is not careful they may end up increasing fleets and decreasing CVNs and have a single Carrier Strike Group for each Fleet - and none (CSGs) to spare!

Unfortunately existing Iron Dome systems are not capable against robust (PRC/Russ) cruise missile threats (hence Israel's Davids Sling) The gap Congress id'd in EUCOM-PACOM should be filled by NASAMS-but Army refuses to buy system ANG uses to protect DC

Folly from advocates of retrenchment & restraint - they argue efforts to defend Taiwan destabilize the region. A US failure to support democracy/uphold our commitments & allow Chinese coercion/authoritarianism to prevail is what will destabilize the region

Cybersecurity is a truly non-partisan issue and can remain so even when applied to a sensitive issue like election security. We must defend our democratic institutions from criminals & nation states alike. Easy to do with leadership like

The key issue is how well we work with Taiwan to develop the tactics, techniques and procedures to effectively employ these various land and sea strike systems. The "sale" is the flashy part, to deter China with these systems we have to back it up with the nitty-gritty training.

Am I dreaming or did this same SECDEF just LOWER the Virginia class SSN request in the FY21 budget from 2 boats to 1? Getting religion about SSNs after you have submitted your final actionable budget seems a little too much like Jimmy Carter and Harold Brown in 1980.

But you just used a Porsche to do a Ford F-150 job. SSNs need to be discreet and well positioned to sink PLAN or RFN ships and subs. Period. As long as we are "down" 20-25 subs from our stated need for 66 we need to find other assets to do land strike.

This is a great summary. It's easy to be blinded by the threat from the "carrier killer". Equally problematic is the combination of ground launched Cruise Missiles (CJ100) & air launched CMs (CJ20) & ship launched CMs (CJ10). They place our airfields & logistics in PACOM at risk

Ben/Brad are 100% right. Strategically this rewards countries that spend LESS GDP on defense; operationally this move weakens our logistics readiness; fiscally it will cost a LOT of $$$. I would add one more log to the fire - why did the Admin ADD 1500 troops to Germany in 2018?

Another legitimate question to ask is exactly what does Germany get for $50B/year in defense spending especially when compared to Japan's $50B/year. The Japanese get substantially more capable, more ready & more integrated forces. Germany needs to improve its spending efficiency

Could not agree more - a small investment in U.S. forward stationed forces in Germany enables NATO force flow and deters Russia. Trump Admin realized this when they ADDED troops to Germany in Sep 2018 A Potentially Deadly Blow to NATO via

This would more effective if the Navy would acknowledge the need for unmanned fighter aircraft as part of next generation air wing. Unmanned refueling is only a first step in the right direction. The next gen fighter they plan to START building in the 2030s is manned.

Elsewhere in the report it even more explicitly says "ahead of the U.S" in these 3 areas (shipbuilding, conventional ballistic and cruise missiles and integrated air defense). These are 3 critical areas if you are trying to undermine/hold at risk a U.S. Air-Sea Battle capability

Gen Deptula is right about the impressive striking power of the B-1 plus LRASM. It is ironic that Sen McCain had to force the missile on DoD/USAF leadership from 2016-2018, constantly adding numbers to the budget & forcing the integration of LRASM w/the B-52 (which is years late)

Deterring China will require that Taiwan buys the right gear to make themselves indigestible & continue the slog to a volunteer force that is truly joint; and the US organize persistent, realistic US-Taiwan training & exercises that convince the PRC they will have to deal with us

It has been a few years since the U.S. had the ability to do what Flournoy argues for, our limited number of SSNs can't act that fast and we don't have enough LRASMS yet. There may be a good reason to grow the size of the Army but let's not pretend it has anything to do w/China

Great recommendations. We need to re-establish the US leadership role in int'l standards setting organizations. This requires 3 steps - establishing an Asst Secretary of State for Cyber; funding NIST, State and others to participate; and better partnering with US industry.
