1. I worked with Anna Zaitsev (Berkely postdoc) to study YouTube recommendation radicalization. We painstakingly collected and grouped channels (768) and recommendations (23M) and found that the algo has a deradicalizing influence.

This sounded like an interesting piece of neutral science until this tweet.
-
Given the significant limitations with the methods, writing this Medium piece was deeply ill-advised.

The flaw is not about which version (2018 vs 2019) of the algo they examined, the flaw is a deep misunderstanding of how personalization works. Any study that claims to study radicalization using a logged out user is null and void.
-
Also this about anyone using "saucy" to describe data science.

so "the late 2019 version of the algorithm doesn't do the thing" means that past criticisms were invalid and a "crusade" even though youtube has publicly announced changes/fixes to the algorithm multiple times in the last couple years?

I got as far as "YouTube's late 2019 algorithm" and realized that, while this study is interesting, it does nothing to prove or disprove what happens to users over a broad spectrum of time.

Vague:This is clear to see by comparing an estimate of the recommendations presented (grey) to the recommendations received (green) for each group Recommendation impressions are an estimate of the number of times a video has been shown to another vid who received that impression

It’s great for social cohesion that YouTube recommendations tend to deradicalise, or mainstream, holders of extreme or fringe beliefs. But...

“Mainstream media is significantly advantaged at the expense of independent YouTubers and Missing Link Media... It favors mainstream media and cable news content over independent YouTubers, with a slant towards partisan channels.”
