I am beyond THRILLED to announce that I will be working on my Ph.D. thesis under the mentorship of Dr. Akiko Iwasaki and Dr. Craig Wilen to study some cool tricks that viruses do to evade our immune system. Few years ahead full of viruses!🤓

Our PI, , asked us to start incorporating a teachable moment into our lab meeting presentations where we talk about a technique, a virology principle, etc. So naturally I talked about plaque purifying virus, because who doesn’t love a good throwback?

Thanks to the really cool study previously done by and this one, we can see how Nsp12 E802D in SARS-CoV-2 might arise upon RDV treatment in vitro and in vivo!

SARS-CoV-2 can use chicken ACE2 when expressed on BHK cells (see fig 3c of ) but there are evidently other restrictions in chicken cells (fibroblasts, same paper). Big bird is just being cautious... No harm in that. I hope he's planning a flu jab too!

The next chapter of anti-Covid is about to start with pills that inactivate the virus, irrespective of variants. First will be Molnupiravir in a matter of weeks, then this one. Helping to get us onto an exit ramp.
