if you're your own best customer, you're only building for people like you because your best customer gets priority

Yeah. Exactly. You cannot take it to the point of isolation. But I tend to hire towards excitement and passion.

passion is great; shouldn't it be passion for the paying* customer as the 'best' customer though? (* not always paying in money)

I think I would disagree. My background is non for profits and open source. Being passionate about ethics is most important to me and I think engineers who have a strong ethical guideline create amazing products for our customers.

A rising tide lifts all boats in my thinking. I try not to overly focus on paying customers but rather to create ethical and great products. Profit comes second in my mind.

switch customer for consumer/user/whatever; I still think being your own best customer distorts priorities. I write about things I'm interested in, but I can't write a piece I want to read - it has to be what the readers want to read

Well that’s why you need to hire your customers. I don’t know. I’m biased as I’m used to OSS communities. We hire folks who are actively involved and interested in improving the product. Folks making products they don’t actually use or have passion for? Sounds bad to me

I'm not saying 'don't use your products'; I'm focusing on the word 'best'. hiring your customers don't scale to a large customer base and hiring people changes them over time

I think we'll just have to disagree here. I see the validity of your concerns but it doesn't correlate to my experience in OSS communities.

yeah, open source is different because of the blurring of the lines between customers/consumers and developers, but it tends to be rather different from within a technology company with products ;)

I mean...I wouldn't call mozilla or linux foundation or red hat or any other OSS based companies not tech companies with products.

I wouldn't call the Linux Foundation a tech vendor. Mozilla's funding coming from Google is a very different position from being, say Microsoft or IBM or, indeed, Google. don't think I've ever heard Red Hat call itself the best OpenStack customer
