My least favourite thing about isolation during the pandemic is the number of men suddenly discovering that childcare is fucking difficult. And instead of learning from it, they're just reframing this difficulty as a form of social oppression. https://twitter.com/izs/status/1276424491048947712 …

there is certainly great discussion to be had about the parent penalty..esp for women.... there is also maybe discussion to be had about some of the privileges that come w/childlessness (like quiet time).. but words matter. he chose different words. oh well.pic.twitter.com/QOcCb2WtFd

this is my favorite one of the thread tho: https://twitter.com/izs/status/1276559333879209984 … "the same result"??? buddy you end up w/a whole kid, meanwhile, as my mom reminded me the other day, i won't even have anyone to complain to when i'm old, let alone take care of me (thanks mom! 😂)

Right?? I’m childless by choice and so many try to convince me to change my mind by saying, “But who will take care of you when you’re old?!” W/ the $ I save from not having kids, I’ll hire someone? Seems like a selfish reason to have kids.

Someone had to raise that person you're theoretically paying to care for you, and I bet you prefer your caregiver had thoughtful, loving parents

This tweet in particular made me think of every time a boss would justify paying a man more than me & female colleagues w/ “but he has a family to support”—& every time my *widowed* mom was passed up for raises/promotions/etc in favor of men “who had families to support” 😑

I think he's chosen the wrong words but the core idea is sound. Parents are expected to do a job that everyone's well being rests upon (raising the next generation) with pitifully few supports and get all the blame if anything goes wrong.

We don't need billions upon billions more people. Some of us have chosen to leave room for the next generation, that doesn't make us privileged. And having kids just to produce caregivers is extremely selfish.

It'll be the same result for him. Like his kids are going to want to take care of him when he's old once they find out how he really feels about them 😂😂

Not to mention how society is structured around parents and their comfort. We censor for children, mind safety, provide special leave and tax breaks— all of which are good things, but those of us who can’t or won’t raise kids don’t have that kind of support for particular needs.
